First of all, let’s answer the question: What is the Paleo Diet? The Paleo diet basically takes you back to the cave man days of eating anything that you could pick from a tree, pull from the ground, or kill with your bow and arrow. Almost anything that comes from the earth as a natural element and is unprocessed will be a good food for the Paleo diet. So, why even try the whole caveman thing? Well, because it takes your body back to its basic instinct. It will no longer have to work as hard to digest the over-processed foods we all consume. Eating foods that don’t come in a box or bag and don’t have ingredients you can’t pronounce will get your body back on track and shock it in the best way possible. Some super basic guidelines of the Paleo diet: No dairy, low in fruits and nuts, and high in protein and vegetables. Sounds boring right? Well, it’s amazing how tasty all of the meals can be with the right seasonings. I’ll give you an example. I was following a Paleo Diet challenge and the first meal for dinner was baked chicken with sautéed spinach and onions. I thought to myself, “gross”, how good can that possibly be? Well I amazed myself and made such good sautéed spinach and onions, that my boyfriend was asking for seconds! You can find my recipe here. Some more good news is that you can eat vegetables until your heart’s content without needing to worry about portion control. The whole idea behind this is that vegetables are so low in calories, and you’re only having meat along with them; go crazy! This is probably my favorite part of the Paleo because I hate having to worry about portion size. I want to eat until I’m satisfied, not until someone tells me to stop. I also love it because calories are not a concern. You know exactly what foods you’re putting in your body. There aren’t any guessing games and the foods you’re eating haven’t been processed 10 times over to enhance flavor. Check out my recipe page for some tasty and easy Paleo recipes like my coconut oil sweet potato fries. Trust me, they’re delicious!! I will admit I’ve always been curious about trying a Paleo diet. For some reason, though, it took me a couple months to actually hunker down and do it. I was a serial snacker, and I started to see a steady weight gain happening that I didn’t like. I turned to the Paleo diet to shock my body and get my eating back on track. I’m happy to say that it worked, and I truly didn’t feel like I was on a “diet” (and man do I hate that word). I really wrote this quick entry to let everyone know that it’s not as restrictive as people may think, and it’s really workable in your everyday life. Feel free to send any questions or comments my way on how you think a Paleo diet would work for you!
